In the winter semester 2022/2023, the module "Laboratory Course in Chemistry" and the "Modern Methods: Physical Chemistry" seminar were replaced by the new module "Chemical research internship for teacher training students" in accordance with the 2nd Amendment of the Examination Regulations of September 22th, 2022.

The module "Chemical Research Internship for Teaching" consists of two parts:

  • A research internship with a final report
  • A seminar with a paper

The research internship provides an insight into a current, chemistry-related research topic. The internship is completed by the students by individual agreement in one of the working groups of the Department of Chemistry. The research internship can also be completed at external research institutions or in industry.

There is no definition of the duration and working hours of the research internship. The beginning and working hours are agreed with the respective supervisors. The research internship can be started at any time by students of the Master’s teacher education programs. It can be completed during the lecture period as well as during the lecture-free period of the winter semester and the summer semester.

The workload of the research internship in the working groups comprises 20 working days. These can be completed on a full-time basis within four weeks. However, it is also possible to complete a research internship on a part-time basis, e. g. to continue participating in lectures or examinations. A division into full-time and part-time work is also possible and depends on the flexibility of the working group.

For each research internship a written final report has to be written. This must be submitted to the examiners no later than four months after the beginning of the research internship. A presentation of the results within the working group is not necessary in principle, but may take place according to the tradition of the working group.

The seminar on the research internship serves to present and reflect on the results and insights gained in the practical part. The presentation includes, on the one hand, a suitable presentation of the scientific results developed. On the other hand, the type of scientific procedure that is characteristic of the subject of chemistry is reflected in the sense of the NOS (Nature of Science). For this purpose, the procedures and scientific research methods chosen in the sense of the intended acquisition of knowledge are presented in a substantiated manner. In addition, the research topic will be examined in relation to possible technology and application contexts.

The seminar on the research internship takes place only in the winter semester, even if the students complete the research internship in the summer semester.

Chemical research internship for teacher training students - FAQ

Who will be covered by the new regulation? What happens if I have already passed the "Laboratory Course in Chemistry" and/or the “Modern Methods: Physical Chemistry” seminar?

  • Students who have completed the module "Laboratory Course in Chemistry" do not have to complete the module "Chemical research internship for teacher training students". If they have not yet done so, they must complete the seminar "Modern Methods: Physical Chemistry".
  • Students who have not yet completed the module "Laboratory Course in Chemistry" must complete the module "Chemical research internship for teacher training students" according to the 2nd Amendment of the examination regulations. If the seminar "Modern Methods: Physical Chemistry" has already been passed, it can be accepted for the "Seminar for chemical research internship for teacher training students" upon application to the examination board for chemistry.
