New language requirements

When do I have to submit the proofs of language proficiency?

Proofs of language proficiency must be submitted at the time of enrolment and not at the time of application.

The new examination regulations 2022 for the Master’s program in Chemistry also include new language requirements:

  • § 2 Abs. 3: "Das Studium findet grundsätzlich in deutscher und englischer Sprache statt"

  • § 3 Abs. 4: "Für diesen Masterstudiengang ist die ausreichende Beherrschung der deutschen Sprache nach § 3 Abs. 7 ÜPO UND der englischen Sprache nach § 3 Abs. 9 ÜPO nachzuweisen." (ÜPO = Übergreifende Prüfungsordnung)

As proof is accepted in accordance with § 3 Abs. 9 ÜPO, e. g.

  • “a certificate of English language proficiency at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). This proof is provided, for example, by the presentation of a German Abitur certificate, from which it can be seen that English has been taken consistently up to the end of Qualification Phase 1 (year level 11 for G8-Abitur, otherwise year level 12) and completed with at least sufficient achievements."

The ÜPO offers the possibility of recognising a “bachelor’s thesis written in English or a colloquium conducted in English” as proof of English language proficiency. This option is not available for the Master’s program in Chemistry.

If you have any questions about proof of German and/or English language, please contact the Registrar's Office.

If you do not yet have proof of English, the ÜPO offers a very good alternative for enrolled students, since you can take the placement test of the RWTH Aachen University Language Center easily and free of charge.
