Sulfur-containing and heterocyclic compounds are of growing interest from medicinal chemistry and for the synthesis of potentially bioactive compounds. The entirety of all known and accessible compounds is characterized as the so-called Chemical Space. The aim of the thesis „Transition metal-catalyzed syntheses of heterocycles and sulfur-containing compounds” is to contribute to the expansion of the Chemical Space through the development of several methods for the synthesis of such compounds.Thematically, this work is divided into four different projects. Firstly, a new class of sulfur-containing boronic acid building blocks for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-couplings was developed and their applicability was examined. Furthermore, different synthetic approaches towards a potentially bioactive sulfur compound were performed. Moreover, this work focuses on the development of rhodium-catalyzed protocols for the synthesis of six-membered heterocycles and for the synthesis of unprecedented sulfur-containing heterocycles.
